The murloc is a magical, nonhumanoid creature. Though it is a powerful, destructive creature, it is also very playful. Murloc is a combination of human speech with guttural sounds, which are often distorted or reversed. The original language, Nergish, is the basic language of all murloc races, and the official language of the Makrura and some other aquatic races. Nergish is "imaginably difficult" for the average murloc to decipher, leading most murloc characters to be seen as questionable by other races. However, they are very colorful and expressive, being able to communicate with their surroundings and humans with great ease.

The naming of murloc is another challenge in World of Warcraft, especially since most murloc characters have no names. Most of them have titles such as "Lord"Lord's Assistant." There are exceptions, such as "Chief," which refer to an ocean-dwelling demigod, and "Magister," which is a level-90 elite priest. The highest position in the Makrura society, however, is a position called "Grandmaster." This title is only awarded to murloc characters who have become members of the guild.

To get into the guilds of murloc players, they first need to complete a quest chain. After this step, they must then go to the city of Stranglethorn Vale and do a quest that tells them where to find murloc. Once they find their first murloc, they can begin working towards finding their next.
