The Suliban are ancient, extremely warlike warp-capable species. They were known during the late 22nd century as a very nomadic species, engaging in skirmishes and wars with other cultures on numerous occasions. When they started to travel to distant parts of the galaxy to seek new worlds for themselves, they took on warp-drive technology, allowing them to travel at faster than light speeds. Because they were very capable of war, they became known as a formidable race.

The Suliban were featured extensively in Star Trek: The Original Series. They were notorious for their fighting prowess and were instrumental in winning battles for the Federation. They often fought against the Klingon Empire and the Borg. They even once went toe-to-toe with the United Federation of Planets. However, in order to gain the respect and admiration of other cultures, they had to be portrayed as villainous. Although they were often depicted as savages, they were also brutal conquerors who were willing to engage in combat with anyone they considered to be of equal strength.

In fact, they were so good at war that their tactics of war was so successful that they actually became more powerful than the empires they fought against. The Suliban took up battle against the Klingon Empire and won over the entire Klingon fleet, using their speed, strength and agility to their advantage. They then went to war against the Borg in the 23rd century, defeating the Borg in an epic battle that saw their fleet destroyed. In order to gain complete control over the Borg Collective, the Suliban killed many of its drone ships, thus leaving it weakened and vulnerable. By the end of this period, the Federation was able to put a bounty on the head of their leader, Locutus, and demanded the return of the cube he was occupying. Although the Federation and the Klingons managed to defeat the Suliban and regain their cube, the Suliban still occupied the area. They also became involved in a struggle with the Federation in the last two years of the Federation's existence.
